If you would like to read the bible for all its worth then you will find some excellent study guides. These include a nearly complete set of William Barclay’s Daily Study Bible on each book of the Bible. If they present as daunting do not be put off, Mildred Phipps is the person to get you started and to help you navigate your way through.
For those of you running regular youth events and feel that your opening games need some fresh impetus then try Bob Moffett’s Crowd Breakers: A Hundred Games and Activities for some bright inspiration.
Local preachers in training will find some excellent study guides to the church year and resources to link you to the lectionary, along with prayer and drama books. These range from a copy of the Dramatised Bible to Riding Light Sketches .If you are more of a reflective person then you may be attracted to the poetry and prayer section from the Lion Book of Christian Poetry to nearly a complete set of Donald Hilton’s Words to Share series - they are all there.
And for those days when you want to explore your Methodist heritage you could try John Wesley’s 44 Sermons or John Vincent’s Ok, Lets be Methodists.
My favourite however is a little book, by Methodist Minister Pauline Warner entitled Telling the Old Old Story. It is a witty piece where she links Fairy Tales with Christian thought through the ages. It is the first time I have seen Hansel and Gretel linked with St Augustine and the poetry of Herbert! So come in and browse and if you can’t find exactly what you were looking for, speak to Roger – he has more at home and knows Pauline would like them read. RevJulia
